Key Events of the month_ February 2009
February 2 The Government requested all civilians to enter the demarcated 'safety zones'.
February 4 The 61st Independence Day celebrations were held under tightened security. In his speech President Mahinda Rajapakse declared that the LTTE would be decisively defeated in the next few days The Canadian Parliament called for a Ceasefire in Sri Lanka.
February 5 Troops took full control of Visuamadu.
February 7 5600 civilians have reached the government controlled areas in Puthukkudiyiruppu.
February 9 28 including 20 security forces were killed and 60 injured in a suicide blast in Sugandirapuram of Mullaitivu District.
February 13 The Government has cancelled with immediate effect the radio transmission licence issued to the LTTE peace secretariat during the tenure of the cease-fire agreement.
The Government has taken measures to re-establish the Police station in Kilinochchi after almost a decade. The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mahinda Balasooriya, who visited the area recently, said the Kilinochchi Police station is the first of 20 Police stations scheduled to be established in Wanni. Government rejected the appointment of Des Browne, UK’s special envoy for Sri Lanka to focus on Humanitarian efforts.
February 15 According to the Ministry of Human Rights and Disaster Management, over 35,000 civilians have safely reached the Government controlled areas in the February of 2009.
The UPFA won the Central Provincial Council elections held on February 14.
February 17 “More than 2000 Tamils have been killed while more than 4500 injured in Vanni due to the unrelenting attacks by the three armed forces of the Sri Lanka government in the recent past,” Sampanthan, the leader of the TNA said at a press conference. He further stated that this is the schemed and systematic genocide of Tamils.
February 19 UN Secretary General Sir John Holmes arrived in Sri Lanka to evaluate humanitarian situation.
February 20 Troops captured Ampalavanpokkanai village in the Mullaitivu District
Two LTTE light aircrafts were shot down in Colombo and Katunayake. At least 50 people were injured. Two of the wounded persons later succumbed to death.
February 21 The LTTE declared that the air strike on the 20th February was carried out by the elite Black Air Tiger squad.
February 22 Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said that around 250 LTTE cadres have surrendered to the military within the past few weeks.
The Political Head of the LTTE, B. Nadesan, made an appeal to the heads of the Tokyo Co-chairs countries. He quoted saying "when a permanent political solution is reached for the Tamil people, with the support and the guarantee of the international community, the situation will arise where there will be no need for the arms of the LTTE".
February 23
Security forces were closing in on the Puthukkudiyiruppu town, the outfit's last stronghold, and they managed to regain a section of the earth bund in the Kombavil area of Mullaitivu District.
The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for a ceasefire between the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE to allow the safe passage of civilians and also to arrive at a political solution to the conflicts.

October 2 The UN officials in Sri Lanka deplored the placing of explosives by an unknown group on a Government truck that was due to join a UN food convoy
October 4 The Sri Lankan army chief said that the forces are two kms away from the Kilinochchi town and the government has proposed to declare Vishvamadu and Oddusudan in Kilinochchi a no war zone after the army consolidated its position there.
October 5 Citizens of Eastern Province living in and around Colombo (Western Province) were asked to "re-register" themselves with the police

October 7 The dead bodies of four civilians were recovered from the deep jungle areas off Dekethipothana at Horowpathana.
October 8 The leader of the LTTE V. Prabhakaran met the IDPs in Vanni area to address the immediate needs of the IDP.
October 9 Minister Maithripala Sirisena escaped a suicide attack at Pirivena junction in Boralesgamuwa in Colombo.

October 12 The Leader of the TMVP Karuna in an interview said that they have decided to rename the TMVP mainly to get the help of the people of the South.
October 13 Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said that Australia is considering formally declaring the LTTE a terrorist group.
Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said the war on the LTTE will not be slowed by international financial turmoil placing pressure on the Government’s military budget. October 16 Commissioner of Essential Services, S.B. Divaratne said that the predictions made by several NGOs claiming that a scarcity of foods can occur if Wanni operations continued have been proved false as the region is maintaining a buffer stock for two to three months in all items.
50 World Food Programme Lorries carrying essential food items, medicine and other dry rations for Wanni civilians were forced to return to Vavuniya due to artillery fire and claymore mine attacks.
October 17 President Mahinda Rajapaksa in an interview with The Hindu newspaper reaffirmed that his Government is committed pursuing towards a political solution.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogollagama said that Sri Lanka is fighting against terrorism and reiterated that there is no ethnic conflict in the country and India has no intention of intervening in the internal issues of Sri Lanka.
October 24 A 60-km-long human chain demonstration was held in Chennai to highlight the plight of Tamils caught up in the war in Sri Lanka

Casualty Figures for October Senior Government Minister W.D.J.Seneviratne opening the emergency debate told Parliament that 171 security forces personnel had been killed in operations and 1122 injured during the past month. He also stated that 38 civilians had died and 62 were injured.

September 1 Troops captured the strategically important Malawi town It was reported in BBC that civilians living in LTTE-held areas were asked by the outfit to build bunkers. The leaflets said, "No houses should be without bunkers. Be it road junctions, play grounds, schools, business establishments, offices- in all places bunkers should be constructed as Safety Mechanisms." The Government announced the Ministry of Defence had taken "swift measures to establish a safe corridor" to enable passage of civilians in the LTTE-held territory in the north.
September 2 The troops took full control of the Malawi area
September 3 19 partly disfigured and decomposed corpses of soldiers delivered to the ICRC officials by the LTTE. The UN officials in Sri Lanka urged the LTTE to allow the civilians to leave the battle fields for safety.

September 9 Two LTTE aircrafts with the support of artillery and 10 suicide cadres attack the Wanni army head quarters in Vavuniya. The SLAF said the fighter jets intercepted the two fleeing aircrafts and shot one down in Mullaitheevu jungle. The Sri Lankan government ordered the United Nations (UN) and non-governmental aid workers to leave the war-torn northern Wanni region. United Nations said that it will withdraw from LTTE held territory while the ICRC said it will not leave as the ICRC is committed to stay close to those in need of humanitarian aid and to meeting their most urgent needs.
September 11 Seven civilians, who had gone for cultivation, were killed at Ethimale village in the Kotiyagala area close to the Ampara-Moneragala district borders.
September 12 IDPs blocked NGO and UN vehicles from leaving Vanni
September 14 Police spokesman, Ranjith Gunasekara, has said the government has no intention of sending back civilians, who have entered Colombo to escape from the north and east conflict.
September 15 The troops of the 57 Division advanced six-kms east of Akkarayankulam tank in the Kilinochchi district President Mahinda Rajapakse said troops were on track to capture the outfit’s political capital in Kilinochchi by the end of the year. Ruling out a future cease-fire with the LTTE he vowed to "finish the war as soon as possible". The President further said that his Government will seriously consider any request from India to hand over the LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran when he is captured.
September 16 The Government has reportedly put its health authorities on alert in order to face any possible chemical attack by the LTTE during the fighting in the North The United Nations' last team in Wanni war zone safely reached Vavuniya.
September 17 Troops captured a 1.5-kilometres stretch of the huge earth bund at Karampaikkulam, eight kilometers northeast of Nachchakuda, in the Kilinochchi district. The LTTE have used CS gas to attack Sri Lankan soldiers recently in the battlefronts of Wanni region The security authorities have decided to hold a special census on the people now living in the Western Province after fleeing the LTTE-held areas.
September 18 At least 25 Sea Tigers, cadres of the sea wing of the LTTE, were killed and 10 Sea Tiger boats, including three big ones, were destroyed in a four-hour long sea battle between naval troops and the Sea Tigers in the seas off Valaipadu at Nachchakuda in the Kilinochchi district. Army Chief Commander Sarath Fonseka said that the LTTE will go underground rather than 'fight to the last man'
September 21 The UN in Sri Lanka announced that its offices in the LTTE-held Kilinochchi have been looted.
September 22 The number of people who have migrated from Sri Lanka’s five warn-torn districts to Colombo and its suburbs, which constitute the Western Province, since 2003 stands at 37,037, said the police.
September 23 The US Ambassador Robert Blake while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Kalawanchikudi Vocational Training Center in the Batticaloa district said Abductions and extra-judicial killings and other security challenges must end in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka to attract private sector investments to develop the region
September 24 Addressing the 63rd session of the United Nation General Assembly in New York the President Mahinda Rajapakse asserted that Government will only be ready to talk to the LTTE when it is ready to commit itself to decommissioning its illicit weapons and dismantling of its military capability, and return to the democratic fold.
September 25 Insisting that the minorities of this country should not make undue demands, Army Chief Sarath Fonseka said he believed the ongoing war would end in less than a year.
September 27 The UN Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, stated that the first convoy of food supplies since 16 September, will travel under the UN flag to areas held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the north in the next few days,
September 28 An LTTE suicide cadre on a bicycle struck his bike against a three-wheeler and blew himself up killing one civilian and injuring nine others in the Vavuniya town. One of the injured soldiers died later.
September 29 The Supreme Court today (Sept. 29th) ordered the Inspector General of Police to remove all barricades on Galle Road in the stretch between Galle Face to Kollupitiya Junction.
Government official casualties figure The Prime Minister told parliament that between September 1 – October 1, 200 soldiers have been killed and 997 injured due to the ongoing conflict, while 13 civilians were killed from LTTE attacks.
